    About Alan

Flora and fauna have always fascinated me but it was a lifelong career in horticulture that filled most days.

Having grown up on a farm where boyhood days were filled with discoveries of the natural world I soon found that my passion for plants – wildflowers at that time – would direct my career…

It’s not unusual to find a wren in the greenhous It’s not unusual to find a wren in the greenhouse and they help to keep any pests down. But I was surprised to find this beautiful little long tail tit.
Fortunately I was able to guide it out without it getting hurt.

Almost the last daffodil to flower and a real char Almost the last daffodil to flower and a real charmer! It’s hard to get a handle in the scale here but that’s a big 7.5litre pot full of ‘Minnow’. I’ve also got a drift growing in the ground and that is a full week behind (as all bulbs in the soil have been).
Another great variety from @dutchgrown_com !

Rhodanthemum Casablanca is such an underrated plan Rhodanthemum Casablanca is such an underrated plant! Give it sun and fast drainage and it repays with masses of daisies in spring.

Not a lot of difference between Casablanca and African Eyes and both worth planting!

Here planted in an old stone container with the purple form of sea thrift Armeria maritima 'Rubrifolia'

Blackthorns have been exceptional in bloom this sp Blackthorns have been exceptional in bloom this spring! Apparently unaffected by the recent frosts it will be interesting to see what effect this has on fruiting and the all important sloes.

My grandfather would always call this a “blackthorn winter” since we invariably get a cold spell when blackthorn is flowering.

These are in the #leylandway and #monarchsway in Somerset.

Accompanied by garden warbler, wren, robin, chaffinch, great and blue tits and the distant cawing from a rookery. (Sorry no sound)

How fortunate am I?

An old Narcissus in our village churchyard and pop An old Narcissus in our village churchyard and popping up in other older gardens too.
I believe this is White Lady which can be traced back to pre 1897.
It has an old world charm and is clearly a survivor!
It dances with every slight breeze and has a faint (to me) scent.
