Grasping the Nettle book review

 In Books and Magazines

Grasping the Nettle is the second book written by friend and garden guru Tamsin Westhorpe.

In this book Tamsin takes us through her amazing career!

She started as a humble Parks Department litter picker and progressed through to today. Now she balances running a garden open to the public, giving gardening lectures, being a mum and wife and a thousand other things!

I’m not entirely sure that this book was planned. You see Tamsin fell off a ladder whilst pruning a tree and was very lucky to have not been more seriously injured.

A broken spine meant a long period of convalescence to allow time for her body to mend.

And Tamsin, being Tamsin picked up her iPad and Grasping the Nettle is the result!

Diary of a Modern Country Gardener

Book cover, Tamsin Westhorpe, Diary of a Modern Country GardenerThe first book that she wrote was hilarious and this second is no less enjoyable to read.

The first book, aptly called Diary of a Modern Country Gardener, was a great success and a very easy read.

It depicted Tamsin’s life as a gardener in her family’s garden Stockton Bury Garden in Herefordshire.

Starting in February when buds are dormant but bulbs are pushing through the earth, the book takes you month by month through the life of a gardener. The dairy ends the following January.

By reading this book you will pick up tips from a gardener who is not only an eloquent writer but also a person with mud under her nails!

What of the most recent book I hear you say?

In many ways this fleshes out the life of a remarkable and devoted gardener.

In Grasping the Nettle you will be fascinated, entertained and pick up useful gardening tips in equal measures.

Tamsin leads us through her early life and explains why she became a gardener.

Stories that include false teeth, boyfriends, an old Land Rover, Shih Tzus and cantankerous leaf blowers will have you turning the pages and chuckling in delight!

Throughout the book is artfully illustrated by Rosalie Herrera.

She is one of the most rounded and accomplished garden experts I know and I recommend her latest book to you unreservedly!

Orphans Publishing sent me a free copy of ‘Grasping the Nettle’ to review. It’s now widely available in bookstores and online to purchase now.
